Why Music is Important?
I’ve been performing and learning music for almost a decade, and there’s one question people often ask me: Why should I learn music? What are the benefits of learning music?
I started learning Mridangam (South Indian Percussion Instrument) at the age of 10 and still learning it, I use to go to my guru’s place weekly twice that’s how my childhood days summarised on weekends. No doubt that the career and profession are important. I worked as an accounts assistant at various organizations after my graduation. I’ve been exploring the entrepreneurial path as well. Meanwhile, all these years’ music is the only thing which kept me going further apart from professional life. As a music composer & a percussionist,
I was very fortunate to associate with various artists and glad that I could explore the South Indian rhythms with the help of my parents and gurus.
The impact of music learning helped a lot in my life, it builds soft skills that make a difference in both professional and private life. Today, I am going to share some advantages of learning music that will impact your life in a good way. There are many more advantages to learning music than these, but I find these to be the most prominent ones.
Advantages:
It Builds Confidence: With encouragement from gurus and parents, playing a musical instrument can build pride and confidence. We gain a sense of self-esteem when we see ourselves mastering skills and achieving goals through music.
Communication, Coordination & Teamwork: Social & leadership skills are the 2 important key factors for any field, it develops more connections, collaborations, jamming sessions, etc. Successful communication starts from listening, clarity & emotional control. Music improves our communication skills & coordination ability, the earlier we start learning music the greater it benefits by enhancing our learning capabilities.
Encourage Creative Self-Expression: Music boosts creativity level and allows people to express their inner voice and thoughts. Personally, music has helped me to look into certain things beyond the boundary and express it innovatively, recently I had few collaborations mixing lots of genres “Ignis Fatuus” which was all about bridging the gap between the Indian and Western philosophy of music.
Health: Many research has shown that playing music lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress & anxiety levels. Learning music notes and by hearting helps in improving memory power, this is especially important in protecting ourselves from mind-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Discipline: Dedication and practice will slowly stimulate a well-disciplined routine in one’s life. This will help people in all aspects of their life. I have seen a lot of people hard work for hours and hours to play a simple note to make it sound so perfect. Consistency is the key here repeatedly practicing improves to master what we do.
.
Recognition and Rewards: People involved in the arts have tremendous academic & career benefits compared to others who have no exposure to the arts. It motivates & inspires others.
“This is how music can change your life, start learning music today and taste the success”
In most of the schools, art periods are taught only once a week (in most cases). Music has never been a compulsory subject in our schools. I think that if music is made as a compulsory subject from the lower classes itself then the students will be moulded and polished over the years as they’ll get more time to focus on their art like any other subject. People who usually get exposed to art will get a chance to understand the importance of it. Anybody can learn music through proper ear-training and other exercises.
